TUCSON, Ariz.  (November 6, 2014)  – On October 29, 2014, the YMCA of Southern Arizona honored J. Emery Barker at its Centennial Celebration, admitting him to the YMCA Hall of Fame.

Emery’s relationship with the YMCA extends back almost seventy years to the time when he was a scholarship day camper at the Phoenix Y. In later years he participated in the Y’s Indian Guides Programs.  In 1973 he joined the Metro Board, which he chaired from 1978 – 1980.  He was instrumental in forming the YMCA Youth Foundation which makes possible the YMCA pledge that “no child will be turned away due to an inability to pay a fee.”

For his many contributions to the organization, he received YMCA’s Honorary Life Member award in 1988.  Emery carries on his commitment today as a member of the YMCA Foundation Board.
