Founded before turn of the last century, Boulder’s Hutchinson, Black & Cook marks 125 years

Skateboard jousting and turkey leg-eating contests. Monday morning coffee social hours and Friday afternoon team beers. Year-long sabbaticals full of travel, adventure and volunteer work.

These sorts of workplace hi-jinks and perks bring to mind Silicon Valley startups or tech behemoths. But they all happened at one of Boulder County’s oldest and most respected law firms, Hutchinson, Black & Cook.

The venerable association turns 125 this week, and past and current partners say it is the unique mix of work and play, fun and focus, that has helped the company sustain itself through an ever-changing legal landscape.

“We’re a community-based law firm and I think we have really stayed true to that ethos, since day one,” said Jim Carpenter, Jr., with Hutchinson, Black and Cook since 1978.
